This is the best time of year to plant hedging and we love hedging for it's many amazing contributions to nature and our surroundings. They make the best sound barriers, muffling the sound of nearby roads, neighbours and other noises. But probably the very best reason to have hedging instead of a fence is that it will help the wildlife surrounding your property. It provides them with meters of food and it also serves as shelter for birds, hedgehogs, and reptiles like toads and slow worms. Hedges also provide food and diversity by supporting aphids and other insects, in fact they are by far the single simplest and most effective habitat you can create, often without even realizing that you have!

You can choose evergreen hedges that keep their leaves all year round, deciduous hedges that have abundant food production but lose their leaves in winter, (Or you can mix and have the best of both all year round). They require low but regular maintenance, care, food and water.

  • Evergreen hedges for the coast are Griselina, Euonymus and Escallonia, Teucrium, Hipphopae. Laurus nobilis and Tamarix also Elaeagnus.
  • Deciduous coast hedging includes Prunus spinosa (Sloe) and Crataegus (May tree), Rosa rugosa ( Rugosa or Japanese rose) and Buddleja.
  • Formal hedging for modern gardens can be either Taxus (yew), Laurus rotundifolia (Cherry laurel), Laurus lusitanica (Portuguese laurel), Buxus sempervirens (Box), Myrtus communis (Myrtle).
  • Deciduous Hedging for general use and can be blended with above to create shelter, food and colour all year around – Carpinus (Hornbeam), Fagus (Beech), Acer campestre (Field maple), Viburnum opulus (Guelder Rose), Corylus avellana (Hazel nut), Salix viminalis (Osier)

Always plant hedging well for the best effect – plant with fertilizer such as Bonemeal, Fish, Blood and Bone, Vitax or Growmore but please ask our outside plant department staff for advise on which fertilizer to use for your hedges. Do not let grass grow near the stem of the plant until it is established (2-3 years).
